Quit Tobacco: Live a Healthier Life

Quitting tobacco is one of the best things you can do for your health. It can be hard to stop using tobacco, but it’s worth it.

Why You Should Quit Tobacco
Using tobacco is dangerous and can cause serious health problems. Smoking or using tobacco hurts your heart, lungs, and can even cause cancer in places like your mouth and throat. Tobacco also weakens your body, making it easier to get sick. For pregnant women, smoking can harm the baby, causing low birth weight or early birth.

Benefits of Quitting Tobacco
When you stop using tobacco, your body starts getting better right away!

Right Away:

  • 20 minutes after quitting: Your heart rate and blood pressure go back to normal.
  • 12 hours after quitting: The bad chemicals from tobacco, like carbon monoxide, start leaving your body.

In the First Months:

  • 2 weeks to 3 months: Your blood flows better, and your lungs work harder.
  • 1 to 9 months: You’ll cough less, breathe easier, and your lungs can fight off sickness better.

Over the Years:

  • 1 year: Your chance of heart problems is cut in half compared to someone who smokes.
  • 5 years: Your risk of stroke is the same as someone who doesn’t smoke.
  • 10 years: Your chances of lung cancer are cut in half, and other cancers are less likely.
  • 15 years: Your heart will be as healthy as someone who has never smoked.

Tips to Quit Tobacco
Here are some ideas to help you stop:

  1. Pick a Quit Date: Choose a day to stop and stick to it.
  2. Ask for Help: Talk to family, friends, or a doctor.
  3. Use Tools: Try nicotine patches or gum, or ask your doctor about medicine to help with cravings.
  4. Avoid Triggers: Stay away from things that make you want to use tobacco, like stress or certain places.
  5. Stay Positive: Quitting can be hard, but keep trying. If you slip, don’t give up!

There are also many resources, like quit hotlines, phone apps, and online groups, to help you quit. Stopping tobacco makes your life healthier and happier.
