COMPLETE DECONGESTIVE THERAPY
The best treatment practice for Lymphedema

When the lymph vessels are unable to transport lymph fluid back into circulation it accumulates, resulting in chronic swelling. If left untreated it may result in hardening skin tissue. This build up of protein-rich lymph fluid is known as lymphedema. Once this condition occurs, the swelling may increase if an effective treatment program is not initiated.

WHAT IS LYMPHEDEMA

Your lymphatic system plays a large role in immune function and circulation. It consists of lymph vessels meeting up with lymph nodes located in your neck, armpits, and groin. As the lymph vessels move fluid out of the tissues, waste products, bacteria, dead cells, and large protein molecules are collected. The waste products are carried to the lymph nodes to be broken down and eliminated, while the protein rich fluid is transported back to the heart to rejoin circulation.

WHAT IS COMPLETE DECONGESTIVE THERAPY (CDT)?

A noninvasive treatment to help reduce overall edema.

PHASE 1

  • Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is performed by a certified lymphedema therapist. It consists of gentle stretching of the skin, slow, rhythmic massage, and deep breathing to help stimulate healthy areas of the lymphatic system for movement of fluid from blocked areas back into the rest of the body.
  • Following MLD your therapist will use compression wraps to help continue the movement of swelling from an affected area and prevent its return to the limb(s) or regions.
  • Exercise is an important component of CDT which helps to facilitate movement of swelling from an affected area back into the body for processing.
  • Skin is your primary defense against infection, and with lymphedema your risk of infection is increased. To help reduce risk of infection, skin care will be emphasized through routines than ensure clean and moisturized skin.
