A dermatologist is the medical expert you should consult if you have any significant problem with your skin. Dermatology is the science that is concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the skin, hair and nails.
How many people get skin disease?
The skin is the largest and most visible organ of the body. It reflects the health of the body and acts as a barrier against injury and bacteria. Unfortunately, at one time or another, nearly everyone has some type of skin disease – infants, children, teenagers, adults and the elderly.

Dr. Wright has practiced medicine for close to 30 years and has specialized in Dermatology since 1997. Most recently Dr. Wright had a private practice in Santa Fe, NM. Prior to that, he spent several years practicing across the intermountain west. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at C.U. Boulder, his Masters of Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his Doctor of Medicine from C.U., Boulder in 1987.
Dr. Wright grew up on a farm near Charlottesville, Virginia and it was there he developed great respect and admiration for the farming and ranching community. He also experienced firsthand the lack of access many rural areas have to medical specialties. He knew early on these were the types of communities he wanted to serve. His passion is Melanoma prevention and education. “You don’t tend to find a lot of Dermatologists in rural areas.” says Wright. “They tend to gravitate to larger metropolitan areas. I really wanted to practice in a more rural community where I could make a real difference and save lives. Melanoma is preventable and, if caught early, very treatable” adds Wright. “By giving people easy access to my services, I hope to be able to catch melanomas early so that a person can go back to enjoying the lives they were meant to live.”
Dr. Wright developed a passion for rock and ice climbing at a young age and has climbed with some of the world’s best and some of the toughest routes in the world including Alaska and China. Ironically, he has not yet climbed in Rifle. He still enjoys climbing but admits as he’s matured he tends to stay away from the “death routes”. His climbing companions now include a red healer mix named Morgan and a Terrier Pit Bull named Dozer. Dr. Wright is a huge animal lover and he moved here with his partner, Lisa, who shares his passion for animals and the outdoors.
When asked why he chose Grand River Health for his practice, Wright replies “I got a sense that people really love what they do here. They are passionate about health care. I think this will be a great place for me to make a difference.” He adds, “The location is fantastic! You are so close to everything, yet far enough away from the hustle and bustle. I had the opportunity to hike to the top of Sunlight with the dogs the other day. The view on top was breathtaking. I thought to myself, ‘I get to live here’! Wow!”
“Dermatology has been a specialty identified as a need by the community for many years. We are very excited to have found such an ideal individual to practice the specialty of Dermatology at Grand River Health. Dr. Wright is a great fit for this community” says Lois Kame, Administrative Director of Clinic Services.
